Pear Tree – April 2024

Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta and Antonia Pancel-Cipric, Barron Arts Center

“I’ve only been interested in the artistic side of life.” — Elton John

March has been a dream month, and a very artistic one! My presentation for “Going Going Gone” was held at Barron Arts Center to a full audience. If you missed it, it was filmed by Woodbridge TV and you can see it here on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G–92xnsUCc&t=2s

I also had the honor to write about another Ty Stephens show, making it the third time in my career writing about this legendary artist!

Ty Stephens and Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

And, I got to meet the cool chicks who run Lady and the Shallot at the Trenton Market for a feature I wrote honoring women business owners.

Left to right, Kara Jenkinson, manager; Maryanne, Francesca Avitto, co-owner; Kate Wnek, co-owner

Life continues to be amazing with my dream careers in journalism and speaking!

Pear Tree – March 2024

Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

“I’m not going to limit myself just because people won’t accept the fact that I can do something else.”― Dolly Parton

I love this quote by Dolly Parton. We shouldn’t limit ourselves because of what others think.

We should not be ashamed of our accomplishments. We should not be ashamed of our successes. We should not be ashamed of our talents. We should not be ashamed to have multiple sources of income.

Let’s continue to lift each other up. Let’s share our light because as women, we’ve come a very long way!

Let’s not dim our light — or the light of each other! Rock on and make every moment memorable! You are woman — ROAR like the tiger you are!

There’s a lot of great things happening this month and I’m honored to be a part of them. Check it all out in the EVENTS section below.

Pear Tree – February 2024

“She is more precious than rubies.” - Proverbs 3:15

I found the above Bible quote and looked up what it meant.

A portion of the meaning said “strength of character.”

A strong character is a variety of things. Some include: honesty, loyalty, courage and ambition.

In running your own business, you need all of those.

Pear Tree is now entering its 16th year; and I thank everyone I’ve done business with–and am continuing to do business with. It’s a beautiful ride, and I have a young nephew who is following in my path. He began his business not too long again and is putting together an Instagram page.

A few days ago, I met with a woman who designed my new Pear Tree business cards. It was great meeting up at a Panera and talking business with another business person. I made it a point to get out there more and do more networking. Whether it’s to actually work with other people, or just discuss business, being around like-minded people does wonders for your psyche when you’re self-employed.

There’s nothing I love more than talking about the journey and hearing stories from others.

I hope to meet or work together in this upcoming year!

Happy Valentine’s Day! May you always love what you do; and may your business thrive!

Pear Tree – January 2024

Photo by John Carter, CEO of “Go Pixel Yourself”

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” - Albert Einstein

The year 2023 was a balancing act for sure. In so many ways it was the best year. It was a dream come true being in Ian Hunter’s video “I Hate Hate.” I also came onboard writing for Worrall Media and had a full year of journalism, public speaking, and cat sitting.

During this time I scored two dream interviews — Barbara Harris of The Toys; and Yvonne Elliman!

I also was a cat sitter for so many adorable kitties including a Bengal who I truly bonded with.

And, talk about a dream speaking engagement! March 14, 2024, I will be speaking at Barron Arts Center! (See details below).

Plus, I had not one, but TWO books published this year!! WOW!

But then…..

Tragically, this was also the year my mom passed away and left me going through the motions in a fog. I also lost a dear friend, Richard, who I knew since I was a teenager.

THIS is what made it so hard, of course. Words just can not describe…

As we enter 2024, we move forward…a little older, a little wiser, a little richer, and with a few more scars on our hearts.

No matter how rocky this year may be, I still plan to rock it, as always! What else can you do?

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Pear Tree – December 2023

On the job selfie, just for fun, prior to reporting on an event

“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” — Norman Vincent Peale

It’s so true that Christmas softens the world. Prior to the holiday season, everything seems so rushed, then it slows down and we can really enjoy ourselves. It will be my first Christmas without my mom, who passed away earlier this year. I look forward to being with family and good friends for comfort.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays!

It’s been a beautiful journey which began as a renaissance type of business and is now narrowed down to three major things — journalism, speaking, and writing books. (Along with a side business cat sitting!)

I’ve been many places and met many people, but the best part of the journey is what I’ve been feeling on the inside — a sense of accomplishment, a sense of empowerment, a sense of learning and growing, and a sense of great peace. I’ve been feeling so great lately, so much younger than my years and I’ve been telling myself, “I don’t ever want to retire — this is just too good!”

The “surprise” news that I mentioned last month is that The Gypsy Smiled is going to have a second printing! It will be published by Higher Ground, a publishing company that also did my book, I Don’t Want to Be Like You.

“Going Going Gone” is going going STRONG! I have four bookings coming up.

I’m wishing all of you a very Happy Autumn!

Pear Tree – September 2023

Befriending a cat in Woodstock, NY

“Like leaves we touch, we see
We will know the story
As autumn calls we’ll both remember
All those many years ago…”

(Lyrics “Turn of the Century,” by Yes, composed by Alan White, Steve Howe, and Jon Anderson).

The reason I chose song lyrics about death is that last month, another friend passed.

His name was Richard. He, and his friend Karl approached me at Willowbrook Shopping Mall back in the autumn of 1980. They wanted to talk to me because I was wearing a Gary Numan shirt and they had also attended the concert. Who would have known from that meeting, I’d be a great fan of their band Pharoah, be in the band as part of the stage show, and later marry the bassist.

When you know people that long and are still in touch with them they are like family. (Richard called my husband and I from time to time and always told us he loved us). And it hurts so much when they are gone; and to see their ashes put in the ground.

This has been a helluva summer, first my mom passing, then being blindsided by the death of Richard.

May he rest in peace; he was absolutely awesome. You can read my special tribute to Richard on my regular blog: https://maryannemistretta.wordpress.com/2023/08/27/rest-in-peace-richard-ayala-aka-rik-fabio/

I try to stay strong because there’s a lot going on business-wise and people are depending on me. But truth be told, I’m still walking around like a zombie. Maybe next month I’ll feel better. Death takes its toll on your mind and body, that’s for sure. One day at a time.

Meanwhile, I’m very busy writing for Trenton Journal and Worrall Media. And my cat sitting business is over the top! All my repeat clients, plus two new ones decided to go on vacation at the same time. It’s been a cat dancing party every day and is going on until mid-September!

There are four “Going Going Gone” lectures coming up (see below) and one “Newies.”

Sales for “So You Think You Know the Jersey Shore?” are going super strong! It may be my biggest selling book yet!

And there’s a very special surprise in October!

Pear Tree – August 2023

Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” — Rumi

I probably talk about my career more than anyone I know. I just absolutely love it! Being an author, speaker, journalist (and most recently my cat sitting side business) — I’m living the dream.

Though the past month was rough, mourning the death of my mom (who died June 10, 2023), keeping busy doing things I love was very helpful. I didn’t dread getting up in the morning and looked forward to many of the super fun career things that happened last month — my second book signing for “So You Think You Know the Jersey Shore” at Caldwell Library and seeing some awesome friends; sitting some favorite cats; and interviewing people I highly admire, like supermodel Carol Alt!

I’m still existing in a bit of a grief fog and I do admit it can be hard taking it “one day at a time” but as hard as it is, I’m surrounded by amazing people in my career and in my life, who all make the journey a bit smoother for me. And I thank them!

This month I’ll be celebrating my 60th birthday and I am ecstatic about that!

JOURNALISM

I was ecstatic to interview supermodel Carol Alt who is starring in a new movie, “My Last Best Friend” which will premiere at Union County Performing Arts Center, Rahway, NJ, July 27.

The movie also stars Eric Roberts and Rico Simonini, who will be at the premiere doing a Q&A.

Here is my article, and I am so psyched to go to this! https://unionnewsdaily.com/news/rahwau/my-last-best-friend-to-be-screened-at-ucpac
